The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process through improved digital identity verification, secure data management and enhanced voter registration systems.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting came weeks after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, into law, a development both agencies described as a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation. Coker-Odusote said the legislation elevates NIMC into Nigeria’s foundational digital identity authority, expanding its mandate beyond identity registration to include the management of the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Root Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). She said the reforms would reduce identity fraud, improve access to services and support credible elections through stronger identity verification.
Responding, Amupitan welcomed the reforms and said INEC was committed to working more closely with NIMC to improve voter registration, identity verification and the elimination of duplicate records. He noted that the Commission’s online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform already requires applicants to provide their National Identification Number (NIN), adding that deeper integration between both agencies would enhance the accuracy, security and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral register while strengthening public confidence in future elections.
