The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has apprehended a total of 396 beggars as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to address illegal street activities and improve environmental sanitation across the state.
The development was announced by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who said the exercise forms part of the government’s sustained commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring a cleaner and safer Lagos.
According to Wahab, the apprehended individuals will undergo profiling to determine their identities and circumstances. He added that those requiring assistance would be provided with appropriate support, while others would be handed over to relevant authorities to facilitate their safe return to their respective states.
The commissioner said the initiative is aimed at reducing activities that contribute to environmental challenges and improving the overall security and appearance of public spaces across Lagos.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly emphasised its zero tolerance policy towards activities considered disruptive to public order, including street trading, illegal occupation of public spaces, and environmental offences.
Wahab maintained that the enforcement exercise is not only about removing beggars from the streets but also ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive proper assessment and assistance through appropriate channels.
The government reiterated its commitment to creating a cleaner, more organised, and secure environment for residents, while urging members of the public to support efforts aimed at improving sanitation and public safety across the state.
